The place.
Sidama — the market long wrote "Sidamo" — is the large highland region south of Lake Hawassa, and since 2020 a federal region in its own right. It is one of Ethiopia's great coffee engines: hundreds of washing stations, strong cooperative traditions, and an altitude range wide enough to contain several coffees' worth of character. The high sub-zone to know is Bensa — gardens above 2,100 meters producing some of the country's most decorated recent lots — alongside Dara, Aroresa, and Wonsho.
The cup.
Sidama's signature is balance with berry: blackberry and stone fruit in the washed lots, jammier and sweeter in the naturals, with more body than Yirgacheffe and less perfume than Guji. Its breadth is the point — the region supplies benchmark single origins at the top and dependable, sweet blenders through the middle grades.
The trade.
Sidama's range is its buying challenge: G1 Bensa and G4 regional lots share a word and little else. Price and grade tell you where on the ladder an offer sits; the station name tells you whether it belongs there.
The house position.
We treat Sidama as two offerings honestly labeled — station lots for the top of the menu, regional grades for blends — and we never let one borrow the other's clothes.
