The place.
Yirgacheffe is a small town in the Gedeo zone that became the most famous word in washed coffee. The land is intensely cultivated — some of the densest rural population in Ethiopia — with coffee grown in garden plots under shade, interplanted with enset. Washed processing took hold here early, and the region has spent half a century refining it. The names inside the name: Kochere, Gedeb, Wenago, Konga — and at station level, lots from Gedeb (Chelbesa among them) now carry reputations of their own.
The cup.
Washed Yirgacheffe is the reference point other coffees are described against: jasmine, bergamot, lemon, a light silky body, and a clarity often compared to fine tea. It is the origin that taught the specialty world what "floral" means. Naturals from the zone trade the clarity for berry sweetness and perfume, and divide opinion accordingly.
The trade.
The name's fame is its hazard: "Yirgacheffe" appears on more offers than the zone could plausibly supply. Grade alone does not settle authenticity — station, sub-zone, and a defensible chain of custody do. Treat any Yirgacheffe offered without them as a southern washed coffee of unstated address.
The house position.
We list Yirgacheffe only with its address attached. If we cannot name the station, we do not use the name.
